I Love Ugly Watch

Betty is undeniably an icon in her own right. As a teenager growing up, watching her on screen solidified me as a person, and allowed me to be comfortable with who I was. Yes she made mistakes, but she always found a way to make things right.

If the Suarez family are taking applications for a third daughter, I'm first in line. One of the reasons why Ugly Betty resonated with me is because I saw my own family in Betty's. Time and time again they showed that no matter the circumstance, you'll always have a family to listen, love, and laugh with you.

What I loved most about this duo is how well they bounced off each other throughout the series. There wasn't a moment where I wasn't laughing at their one-liners and outlandish theories about everyone BUT themselves!

I fell in love with Justin when he first hit my screen. I was inspired by the way he commanded a room and radiated a confidence that I still wish I possessed even now! I think Justin has to be one of the best queer representations to grace our screens, and not to mention his fashion knowledge was off the charts!

Unlike Marc's mother, Hilda knew of Justin's sexuality early on and wanted him to be unapologetic about it. There were times in the series where Justin was bullied and laughed at by his peers, but that didn't stop him one bit. I want to applaud Ugly Betty for how they handled Justin's story. As a viewer, it was nice to see him grow up and watch his story unfold organically.

Ugly Betty was unstoppable when it came to cameos on the show! We're talking Naomi Campbell, Gabrielle Union, Victoria Beckham, Adele, AND Lindsay Lohan as Betty's arch-nemesis, Kimmie. There are SO many more, but you'll have to watch the series to find out whom!

This doubt was compounded by a recent experience at my wedding, where my wonderful groomsmen and I had a conversation about whether or not I should wear my watch for the photos. We all immediately and unanimously agreed that no, I should not.

Ugly Betty. What does that mean to you? This was a question I considered when I embarked upon my journey of binge-watching all four seasons of this American comedy from start to finish. I can clearly say that Ugly Betty should be somewhat of a modern icon. It is gloriously symbolic of the constant battle of self-worth, intelligence and the elegantly-disguised pressures of the ever-changing world of fashion.

If you have a sense of humor, a soul and a good eye for color, I strongly suggest you watch Ugly Betty. My boyfriend and I watched the entire first season on DVD this past week and fell in love. What looks at first glance like a prime-time telenovela made us laugh and even cry.

I watched the Betty La until end of story I love you very my dear beauty that story although a lot people tell your face ugly i love you cause finally you become more beauty than previous life i love you very much keep up your acting as betty

On the long list of persnickety watch enthusiast turn-offs, two-tone metal has gotta be right up there with 4:30 date windows and copious dial text. But brands wouldn't have made two-tone watches (and wouldn't continue making them) if a lot of people didn't like them very much. And I am one of those someones.

Even without that movie, the Datejust would be the most iconic two-tone. Unlike other watches (the Nautilus, Royal Oak, Overseas, etc.) the watch is defined by its two-tone model. The Datejust is two-tone on a matching two-tone jubilee bracelet, and though not an invention of the '80s, it's a watch that's come to define the decade. Aside from being an empirically good-looking timepiece, it also represents some of the best value in vintage watches today. Dare I say, this is the most under-appreciated watch in existence? I dare say. I'm saying it.

But it's hardly the only two-tone classic. Take, for another example, the Cartier Santos with the gold bezel and two-tone Santos bracelet. You've got the angular shape of the case plus the '70s design language in the iconic bracelet, all tied together with stainless steel and gold (oh, and the blue sapphire in the crown). Nobody can convince me that watch is ugly.

Two-tone also infiltrated the likes of some iconic steel sport watches and gave them new life. Many collectors consider these watches to be the exceptions to the no-two-tone rule. I'm talking about the two-tone Submariner with its blue bezel and blue dial, and the famed Rolex GMT-Master Root Beer. While I'm not knocking a stainless steel Submariner or GMT-Master (I happen to own and love both), the two-tone examples of each are fantastic alternatives.

When you wear a two-tone watch, you're bucking nearly every known trend of today. Gold is a trend. Steel is a trend. Metals are the watch equivalent of skinny and baggy jeans; they come and they go. Right now, in 2021, it's hard not to get swept up in a certain level of hype and hive-mindedness when you're constantly bombarded on social media with images of steel sport watches. But it'll pass. And two-tone will still be here, in the margins, waiting for collectors who are independent enough to give it a shot.

Whatever kitsch was associated with this bi-metal configuration before has slowly morphed into charm. America is, at last, ready to reclaim its rightful two-tone glory. For evidence, look no further than the new president of the United States, who (among a few other watches) has been spotted in his well-worn two-tone Seiko Chrono 7T32-6M90. We've got two-tone in the Oval Office as we speak.

When making the argument for why I think two-tone works so well, I often bring up contrast. A two-tone watch is simply interesting to look at. The Root Beer GMT, while a knockout in solid gold, just loses its extra pop when not in two-tone. Rolex also made its famous Datejust Oysterquartz in two-tone, which is basically retro on retro. My favorite is the blue dial variant, which has excellent contrast and handsome looks.

This is FRESH AIR. Happy Thanksgiving. We hope you're enjoying the holiday. Saturday marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Charles Schulz, the creator of one of the most beloved and famous comic strips, "Peanuts." It was in the 1950s that a depressed, insecure kid named Charlie Brown took his place on the newspaper comics pages. Even if you didn't grow up with the "Peanuts" comic strip, you may recognize this.

SCHULZ: No, I don't recall anybody ever complaining about that. What editors were afraid of in those days, much more than now, was the mention of personalities and things. There used to be a very wonderful lady who had a program out of Chicago called - she was called Miss Frances, and I used to watch it with my little kids all of the time. And I mentioned her name in a comic strip one day. And some editor complained. He said we shouldn't be promoting things like that.

SCHULZ: It was just a natural thing that I always said. If I was playing golf, and I missed a three-foot putt, I might say, oh, good grief, you know. But I've never been one who swore. I've never liked ugly words. I have nothing against - you know, I'm not a purist in that way. But I like words to a certain extent. I'm not well-educated so that I'm an expert on them. But I've never cared for any type of ugly language, even words that are not considered swearing words.

WHITEHEAD: Vince Guaraldi was fascinated by boogie-woogie when he was young, and that rumbling left-hand bass part is boogie modernized and streamlined. He wasn't a super virtuoso, but he was a great piano stylist who favored a pared-down singing line and loved to swing. His fingers were short, but they'd sprint up the keys. Guaraldi would also slip up to the good notes from below, like another great midcentury piano stylist, Nashville's Floyd Cramer. 2ff7e9595c
